Plastic pollution is a growing crisis. We make more plastic than ever before, and billions of pounds end up in the world's oceans every year. There are now trillions of pieces of plastic in the world's oceans, and no square mile of surface ocean is free of plastic pollution.
The fossil fuel industry plans to increase plastic production by 40% over the next decade, leading to more toxic air pollution and plastic in our oceans. All five of the Earth's major ocean gyres are inundated with plastic pollution, including the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
Urgent action is needed to address this global problem.
